No passport ? How did you ENTER Canada ? I smell a rat here someplace.

Mexicans MUST have a visa to enter Canada, since 2009.

Yep, Hwy 1 is the shortest. In some parts, it's all there is. Get off it onto smaller highways and it will take longer. It's Hwy 17 through parts of Ontario. Same road, different number. You can take Hwy 11 from Thunder Bay to North Bay which is somewhat easier driving though less scenic than Hwy 1 but the time is similar. Buy a paper map. There are parts of Hwy 1 where there may not be any cell reception so an internet map won't help you figure out where you are.

Heading through Canada you have a few options in Ontario.

Autoroute 40 West to the ON border. It turns into 417, which turns to 17.

Option 1: Stay on highway 17 to the MB border.

Option 2: In North Bay, take highway 11 North. It will reconnect with 17.

Once you take 17 to MB, it turns to Highway 1 the whole way to Calgary.

The difference between the two options is very little. Under an hour and under 100km. The bigger difference is the fact that highway 17 is much hillier than 11.

I have no idea what that Soviet was trying to do, but he never got you anywhere near your destination. Start out on the Trans Canada Highway, which I believe is HWY 1 in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In Ontario, the number will change to HWY 17 but it is still the Trans Canada Highway. Remain on 17 East until near Arnprior where you will merge onto HWY417. Stay on 417 east to the Quebec border. At this point the name will change to Autoroute 40. This will take you across the top of Montreal.

If your map showed switching onto HWY 11 for a while in Ontario, that also works. The distance is about the same, there are fewer hills but the scenery is not as spectacular.

From Montreal, Take Autoroute 40 west. persist with it into Ontario the place that's going to become highway 417. while that's going to become a 2 laned street, it relatively is highway 17. persist with this till you get to the Manitoba boarder, at which element that's going to become highway a million by way of Alberta. In google maps, put in here destnations Montreal Sault Ste. Marie Thunder Bay Calgary or different Alberta holiday spot and you gets an all Canadian course, 3722km.

The shortest in terms of distance, or the shortest in terms of time?

The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, but as you saw that takes you through USA. So you have to adjust your trip a bit.

You need to realize that if you try to take the shortest route in distance, you may end up on some small backroads in the middle of nowhere that have a lot of stop signs, or has slower speed limits than the major highways.

The Transcanada Highway (Highway 1) is the recommended method. You get on in Calgary and you take it all the way to Thunder Bay (Ontario) before you have to make a decision. Just after Thunder Bay near a small town called Nipigon, Highway 1 splits into two directions. You can head north and go through Northern Ontario and the towns of Timmins (ON) and Rouyn-Noranda (QC). Or you could head south and follow the shoreline of Lake Superior and down to Sault Ste Marie (ON) and Sudbury (ON). In my opinion. heading south is probably the preferable option as it offers more towns in which to stop for food or hotels, or get assistance if you have problems on the trip.

If you use Google Maps, try putting in the starting location of "YYC" which is Calgary Airport, and "YUL" as the destination which is Montreal Dorval Airport. Then just move the line up so it goes through Canada, or add "Thunder Bay, ON" as a destination in between.

As long as you stay on a highway that uses THIS symbol, you will get from Calgary to Montreal.

Basically, just stay on the Trans-Canada.

Head through Ottawa. It is probably the shortest, but, also the easiest. The highway number is 1 (or 401) except in Ontario (17/417), and Quebec (40). Still the same road though.

The transcada is the easiest way to go.
