For a cheap place to stay try contacting members of www.couchsurfing.com or www.hospitalityclub.org . Both websites are dedicated to travelers who are trying to make international connections. You can do searches to find members in certain cities/areas who can show you around, give you advice on the area or even host you for a certain amount of time.

Montreal being a big city, i`m sure there are a few members there who can help ya.

The one thing i really loved when i was there was at the top of Mount Royal: in the park there are maybe 6 metal squirrel statues dressed up in different costumes. Strange but hilarious!
