My friend and I are taking a bus to Montreal this week. We arrive at 3 am on the 19th. Unfortunately, we won't be able to check into our hostel until at least 8 am. I was wondering if anyone knew of any places (restaurants, bars, clubs, lounges etc) that we could hang out at until our hostel opens. It would be great if someone could recommend a place (or places) where we could kill 5 hours. Is anything open all night? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The bars and clubs are all pretty much closing at 3am, as by Quebec law they are not allowed to serve alcohol after that time. Several fast food restaurants and coffee shops will have locations that stay open 24hrs. You will probably find a McDonald's or a Tim Horton's in the downtown area for that.

The Casino of Montreal is open 24hrs a day, so that's one place if you are over 18. You could bring your luggage with you and ask if the casino can store them in the coat check area.

There's also a cafe called "Ciné Express" on St. Catherine Street near Rue Saint Marc that has coffee, pastries, and a booths in the back where you can watch movies. No, nothing shady. It's supposed to be more for the artsy crowd or the insomniac. I hear on Tuesdays they used to have a video gaming tournament into and through the night.

By the way, the bus station will drop you off around the Berri-UQAM area, and at 3am the main city buses and the subway will be stopped. You will only have access to taxis and night bus service. If you walk west two streets, you will reach St. Denis. If anything is open at 3am, it would likely be a place along there.

This Montreal public transit website may help you for maps:

This is the map specifically of where the bus will let you off.

Where is your hostel? That would help to know, as we could recomend something in that area.

That said, there are night buses, though I would take a cab if you don't know the city well enough to get around by bus.

As for 24hrs? There are a bunch of places open 24hrs all around the city, mostly you will find Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Coffee Depot, Second Cup there are also some Burger Kings and Subways, but not so much outside of the downtown area that will stay open 24hrs. As one person mentioned, there are after-hours clubs, but if you have luggage that wouldn"t be a great option...

Also, have you considered that just because you are not checking in until 8am, that doesn't mean that you can't still head down to the hostel and just hang out in the lobby/common area watching TV or something? I have done this at several hostels in the past, give them a ring and see what they say! These types of places are generally pretty accomodating like that, at the very least they would be able to hold your luggage for a couple hours until you check in so you don't have to carry it around with you. ;)

SteveN has a good list.

This depends on where your hostel is. I'm assuming it'll be pretty close to the middle of downtown. There's Dunn's smokemeat, 24hr restaurant. The Casino will be the easiest way to kill all that time, but might be a hassle because the public transport is closed.

There are quite a few McDonalds and Tim Hortons that stay open 24hrs. There are also some after-hours clubs downtown that will be open. One such club is called Circus After Hours and is just down the street from the bus station at 917 Rue Sainte-Catherine East.

The bus station is located at the corner of Berri and de Maisonneuve streets. Just walk one block south on Berri, turn left (east) on Sainte-Catherine, and walk about 3 blocks to get there. You can see their website including opening hours at http://circusafterhours.com/.
