Yes you will need a passport to re-enter the US, but beginning in 2007 you will need one to get in if your are flying and in 2008 you will need one to get in by car or train. For more offical information you should contact the State Department.

It depends on what your status in the United States is. If you are a U.S. Citizen and were born in the United States, you do not need a passport to travel back from Canada. However, if a CBP or other federal officer requests it from you, you should have it. If you are a legal permanent resident of the United States (a citizen of another country but living in the U.S. = A green Card holder), you need your green card upon re-entry. If you are living in the U.S. on a non-immigrant status such as a Student or temporary worker, you need your passport, Visa, and Valid I-94 for re-entry. IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU TRAVEL WITH A PASSPORT OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE whenever leaving the United States. Remember, a drivers license by itself is not proof of citizenship alone. Just Remember, you need to check what requirements are needed to enter Canada also!

No. You have to have a picture ID. I do not have a passport and I have been to Canada about 6 times. The first time we went to London, Ontario. The second time it was to Montreal and the other 4 times was to go to the Canadian Niagara Falls. No passport was needed for any trip, JUST the photo ID.

Yes, in 2005 the law was passed requiring U.S. citizens to show a passport when returning from Canada and Mexico

Depends on your nationality.
You need at least a proof of citizenship, and if not US or Canadian, a passport and possibly also a valid visa to enter Canada (and to return to US).
If you are a US citizen, at this time a birth certificate is sufficient, and passport not required.
