There are two English universities in downtown Montreal - McGill and Concordia. They are both good schools, it all depends what you intend to study. McGill is more well known for science (and yes, they have a med school) but they also have a number of Arts degrees, or education, law, social work, etc. Concordia has the whole range of arts and science programs as well, and also has a fine arts college (and dance, drama etc.). Concordia is a better option if you are looking to work part-time, as they have a good co-op program. I find student life at Concordia to be laid-back (friendlier, more continuing ed students). McGill draws an international student body because of its reputation but (in my opinion) some students stay within the McGill bubble. Depends on your lifestyle and your academic interests. Ultimately both are good choices!

Outside of Montreal, the only other English university in Quebec is Bishop's, which is in Sherbrooke. There are also plenty of French universities but I assume that's not what you're looking for?

In Quebec, colleges and universities are different things. CEGEP (college) can mean two things - a pre-university program between high school and university (not useful if you're coming from elsewhere), or a technical/career program i.e. graphic design, hotel management, welding etc. There are many colleges in Montreal - check out Dawson, Vanier, LaSalle College, just to name a few. They are a good option if you know what career you want and just need the training, and are much cheaper than university.

Mcgill is the most renowned world-wide, and is probably better than Concordia even if you're not looking to go into medicine.

The most obvious one would be McGill. If you're interested, go look into Maclean's university rankings.
